Helpful information on our website specific to SPPA students. Found under Student Resources.
SPPA will offer mock interviews with professional planners on January 31, 2020.
You are strongly encouraged to contact potential employers that interest you, rather than waiting for them to advertise an opening. In the last couple years, several people obtained jobs/internships with this method. This can be done not only by writing “letters of inquiry” or contacting alums but also through conducting informational interviews. See the Pomerantz Career Center's Career Guide for more information. They also show sample email requests for informational interviews.
Or, check the job/internship Links but instead of selecting a state, choose Entire U.S. These links are to organizations that advertise jobs in more than one state.
Private Consulting Firm links are also available.
Let the SPPA Career Services Coordinator know about specific geographical areas in which you are interested, if you have questions about where to search, or if there is a problem with the jobs/internship areas of the SPPA website.
Consider contacting alums in the geographical area or type of job you would like by finding them in the Alumni section of our website. The lists are searchable by state or by year of graduation. If you have exhausted the contact information for alums available there, you may contact the SPPA Career Services Coordinator to put you in touch with other alums who are not listed.
The Career Services Coordinator can assist students in identifying alums to approach about becoming a mentor and should be contacted if interested in working with one. For planning students, a mentor match service is also offered by the Iowa Chapter of the American Planning Association before each annual conference.
Submit your resume to be included in the Resume Book. An electronic version will be prepared in early February and distributed to approximately 600 alums.
If you are a member of APA, you may create and maintain an online resume for no cost.
Poster in the drafting room with job and internships of students last year = potential employers.
Spreadsheet with internships obtained in the last 5 years = potential employers.
Samples of former students’ resumes and cover letters are in the library on the desk just inside the door. Please do not remove the binder from the library so it is available to everyone.
The Pomerantz Career Center only serves undergraduates on campus, but they have some helpful online resources.
