Group of alumni and students chatting at the anniversary reception

The School of Planning and Public Affairs (SPPA) recently marked a major milestone—its 60th anniversary—with a celebratory event held at the historic Old Capitol Museum. The gathering brought together alumni, current students, faculty, and university leaders to reflect on SPPA’s legacy and look ahead to its future.
The event opened with a presentation by SPPA Director and Professor Haifeng Qian, who highlighted key moments from the school's rich history. Attendees were treated to a visual timeline featuring early photographs, the school’s first newsletter from 1980, and a selection of student capstone projects spanning six decades.

A highlight of the celebration was the alumni panel discussion titled “The Impact of SPPA.” Representing each decade of the school’s existence, panelists included Jim Stoner (Class of 1972), Jim Schwab (Class of 1985), Kala Sridhar (Class of 1993), Eric Tysland (Class of 2003), Kirk Lehmann (Class of 2015), and Cami Rasmussen (Class of 2022). The panelists shared reflections on their career journeys, memorable classroom experiences, and how the school’s emphasis on both theory and practice helped shape their professional paths.

Several noted the enduring rigor of SPPA’s core courses—some of which remain in the curriculum today—and recounted stories of navigating coursework in a pre-digital age. Others emphasized the program’s strong policy foundation, the influence of key faculty, and the impressive achievements of their fellow alumni. Looking toward the future, the panel closed with a forward-thinking discussion on what SPPA can accomplish in the next decade and how to continue building on its legacy.

Following the panel, current students showcased their work through capstone presentations and research prepared for a national competition, demonstrating the caliber and ambition of the next generation of public service leaders.

The event concluded with a reception featuring remarks from Graduate College Dean Amanda Thein. Attendees enjoyed reconnecting with old friends, forming new connections, and celebrating six decades of progress and impact. A recording of the event is available on the SPPA YouTube channel.
