Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities
The Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities (IISC) is a multi-departmental effort at the University of Iowa to enhance the capacity of Iowa's communities to address the economic, environmental, and social-cultural issues they face today and build a more sustainable future.
The School of Planning and Public Affairs founded IISC in 2009 through its capstone courses which are required of all our students. These projects partner students and faculty with Iowa's urban and rural communities to identify, design, and implement sustainability-focused projects. In doing so, we provide significant outreach to Iowa's communities, while transforming teaching and learning at the University of Iowa.
