Carrie Schuettpelz

Carrie Schuettpelz, a leading voice in Tribal policy and Indigenous research, has received a $1.1 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This marks the largest award received by any faculty member in recent memory within the School of Planning and Public Affairs (SPPA).

The funding will support Schuettpelz’s archival research into the histories of Indian boarding schools and the complexities of historic Native land ownership. These are two areas central to understanding U.S. Indigenous policy and justice.

Schuettpelz serves as an associate professor of practice and director of undergraduate studies in SPPA, where she brings deep expertise and lived experience to her teaching and research.
