Carrie Lowry Schuettpelz, Associate Professor, UI School of Planning & Public Affairs, has been honored with the 2023 Whiting Foundation Creative Nonfiction Grant for her forthcoming book The Indian Card. The Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant of $40,000 is awarded to writers in the process of finishing insightful and well-researched works of nonfiction.

Schuettpelz is an enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and a former policy advisor for the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. In The Indian Card, Schuettpelz takes “a candid, unflinching look at the sometimes subtle, sometimes ruthless ways federal policies undermine Indigenous culture and society…this is groundbreaking work driven by curiosity, rigor, and high personal stakes.” (Whiting Foundation, 2023).

The Indian Card is forthcoming from Flatiron Books.
