Why did you choose to attend the University of Iowa School of Planning and Public Affairs (SPPA)?
SPPA was an easy choice as the UI campus was already familiar to me. I really appreciate the financial support available for graduate students pursuing advanced degrees, and the ability to further my interests with a range of knowledgeable faculty members and classmates.
What excites you the most about being a part of the local or university communities?
The local community is special to me as someone who values lifelong learning. Within our SPPA community, UI campus, and greater Iowa City there is a wealth of expertise and resources available to share with one another. There is also strong integration of campus and city which has enriched my experience as a student.
What's next for you or where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In five years, I hope to be working for a federal agency, congressional office, or national housing justice coalition.
What advice would you give to someone considering pursuing a master of public affairs at the School of Planning and Public Affairs?
An MPA degree is a good choice if you are passionate about a career in government, the nonprofit sector, have a specific policy-area interest, and more! Personally, I loved studying political science as an undergraduate but wasn't necessarily interested in pursuing academic research. MPA degrees better prepare students to enter the workforce outside of higher education.
What do you enjoy outside of school?
The Pedestrian Mall in downtown Iowa City is a great place to explore! It is very walkable and has diverse options for shopping, eating, and entertainment. Personally, I love to get bubble tea and window shop. Taking a stroll in the Ped Mall is my #1 recommendation for Iowa City visitors!
