The Iowa Board of Regents has officially approved funding for the restoration of the Art Building, marking a significant step forward in revitalizing this historic structure. The School of Planning and Public Affairs (SPPA) is excited for plans to occupy the building with the Graduate College and College of Education’s Art Education and Maker Space. The $37 million restoration is slated to be completed in time for the SPPA to move into the building by the summer of 2026.
Originally constructed in 1936, the Art Building has remained largely untouched since the devastating flood of 2008, which left it in need of extensive repairs. The upcoming renovation will address these long-standing damages, with plans for comprehensive structural restoration and modernization.
The project will focus on preserving the building’s historical integrity while incorporating contemporary improvements to meet the needs of today’s students and faculty. New designs include enhanced accessibility features, ensuring that the building is fully compliant with modern standards, as well as upgraded technologies to foster collaboration among students and faculty. The restoration will not only breathe new life into this iconic space but also ensure it serves as a dynamic, functional hub for academic and creative endeavors for years to come.
