A group of students from Jerry Anthony’s Housing Policy class volunteered their help at an Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity build on September 15th. The home’s construction began sometime in June and the opening is tentatively schedule for October 8th. The framing of the home was already completed by our work day, giving our students the assignment of putting coats of primer on the inside walls. The family consists of Hashim Elkhair, his wife Fhiga Elamin, their three sons and one daughter, all Sudanese refugees. Two of the sons attend the University of Iowa. According to our volunteers, the family is very kind and appreciative of the work done. The new house is located at 1516 Crescent Street in Iowa City.
