What do brownfields, wetlands and community land use mixes have in common? They’re all great topics to demonstrate the purpose of World Town Planning Day! Celebrated each November 8th in 30 countries on four continents, it’s a special day to recognize and promote the role of planning in creating livable communities. Second-year master’s student Jen Baker, City of Coralville’s Brownfields Project Coordinator, helped the two sixth-grade classrooms at Coralville Central Elementary explore how “Brownfields is Recycling Land” and compared how mixing up the right community elements is a lot like making a great batch of chocolate chip cookies. Top it off with a field trip to Iowa River Landing to see brownfields redevelopment and wetlands in action and you’ve got a great recipe for community outreach!
